Dilluns, en companyia d’Andreu Barnils, vaig tenir la sort de conversar llargament a Ljubljana amb el president Milan Kučan, l’home que va aconseguir fer d’Eslovènia un país independent. Hi ha poca gent al món que puga explicar aquesta experiència, que puga explicar què se sent en el moment de proclamar un estat independent. Ell n’és un i per això en volíem parlar.

Kučan, evidentment, està orgullós del que va fer. Però al mateix temps no pot amagar que està trist pel que passa avui a Eslovènia. Viu apartat de la política del dia a dia, però això no vol dir que en visca al marge. I expressava un dolor manifest per la diferència entre allò que volien –ingènuament potser– que fos l’Eslovènia independent i això que és l’Eslovènia d’avui. Una part fonamental de la seua preocupació era el paper de la Unió Europea i la situació de coerció en què hi viuen els països petits. El preocupava molt l’aplicació rigorosa de polítiques dissenyades sense tenir en compte en cap moment els condicionaments locals i el preocupava la pèrdua de sobirania efectiva cap on Eslovènia s’ha trobat enduta. Per exemple, ens explicava que els eslovens volen reconèixer l’estat palestí però no ho han pogut fer per no crear un gran problema diplomàtic dins la Unió. I, doncs, quina independència és aquesta?

You don’t often find a person who can say he made his country independent. Milan Kučan is one of the few living politicians who can show a curriculum that says that he proclaimed the independence of his nation, Slovenia. He has been through what Catalonia wants now, and therefore has a view that is privileged for us.



Ljubljana has changed a lot over these years. The bridges blocked with barricades of the days of independence have given way to elegant terraces where people seek to enjoy the scarce sun of the Alpine spring. But not everything is different; the Parliament, where Kučan had to fight his toughest battles, remains intact with that strange and imposing door full of meaning.

When we greet the president, we show him the journalist credentials that the Slovenian government gave out at the time. The old politician looks at it curiously and mentions to his assistant that it was from the ministry ‘before independence’, as if he were talking about a century ago. ‘We were all very young then’, says Kučan, a man now seventy-six years old who when they proclaimed the independent Republic of Slovenia was just fifty, four years younger than today’s president Puigdemont.
